So yeah, putting the game in context to the time it came, what do you expect?Īlso, Japanese culture has never cared about political correctness and even today, with twitter mobs attacking them constantly for that they completely refuse to accommodate to those "standards" but because of that they're selling like never before while the whole entertainment industry on our side of the planet is on fire xD so I would say they know very well their public, they know what they're doing and they know what sells.
The original game came in 2008, and if you remember NOBODY cared about any of this back then, and everybody was more worried about the financial situation as we were facing one of the hardest economic meltdowns in history (normal economic crisis happens every 7-8 years, mayor ones happens every 100 years or so, 2008 was one of those). I do think that you're a bit sensitive xD It's really a testament to this game that its characters aren't black or white- like Yosuke is a really frustrating character, but he's multifaceted in his personality. Like Yosuke is at his core a really great guy- maxing out his social link reflects as much, and I just want to strangle him when he makes all of these baffling decisions when, as you said, he doesn't really think much on or of them. More a disappointing reflection of the times, but I'm getting off track here. The Kanji incident in the tent was particularly egregious, but I'll say this- Japan's attitude towards homosexuals was pretty sour even in the mid 2000's so it's really no surprise how Yosuke reacted there. I think, for me at least, since the MC is a silent protagonist and we naturally see ourselves in their shoes, I just don't buy that Yosuke wouldn't get admonished more severely for his crude actions. And with Teddie being all for it and Kanji accepting it towards the middle, somewhat makes it out like Yosuke is even more alone in his misery).įirst of all, thank you for the detailed response- I really appreciate your thoughts. In this case, he signs up the girls for something a bit humiliating, but ultimately Yosuke is the most humiliated of all with the crossdressing pageant (which is further emphasized by how you can choose a dialogue option to make the MC seem totally okay with the idea. Or uh, "haha Yosuke sucks" as you put it. The ultimate idea here is that he usually gets comeuppance for his stupidity though.
It's not a glamorous side of him, but it's a part of his character. This causes him to say/do some rather insensitive things a lot of the time (like his comment towards Kanji during the campout, or him making fun of Chie's perceived lack of femininity, or ragging on some of them after exams). A dumbass teenage boy who often acts on his own, without really thinking about it much. If you've gotten this far into the game, you should know by now he can be kind of a thoughtless person.
